Alcatel denies unethical behaviour in Telstra deal
French communications company Alcatel has denied any allegation of “unethical behaviour” in its contract negotiations with Telstra. Alcatel was awarded a Telstra contract in 1999, valued at up to AU$1 billion, to supply DSL equipment to turns Telstra copper wires into high speed data, or broadband, connections. But in 2003, Telstra nominated NEC as its new DSL provider and then in 2005 it named Ericsson as the third supplier, reportedly because of Alcatel’s prices. Alcatel said in a statement today that each of its contracts was carefully tailored. “Alcatel refutes any allegation of unethical behaviour related to its relationships with customers and considers it a key priority to maintain the highest standards in its business practices all over the world,” it said.
